A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF FORT MEADE

Fort George G. Meade is a United States Army installation named after George G. Meade. He was a general who served in the United States Civil War and as a Commander the Potomac Army. The installation includes the Defense Information School, the National Security Agency, the headquarters of the Defense Information Systems Agency and other important organizations.

At the time of the Second World War, Fort Meade was utilized as training center for recruits and camp for the war prisoners. In addition to this it also served as the habitat or the temporary holding shelter for close to 384 German, Japanese and Italian immigrants arrested in the United States. The transfer of the Second headquarters of the United States Army to the post was done on June 15, 1947. The post also began serving as the National Security Agency headquarters in the 1950s.

PRESENT DAY FORT MEADE

While the Army is working out a plan for downsizing over a period of next five years, Fort Meade on the other hand is prepared to employ approximately four thousand more men and women in services. Recently, garrison commander, Col. Brian P. Foley announced that the preliminary analysis shows that Fort Meade is one of the few U.S. Army installations that will actually expand rather than contract by the close of the decade.

The growth is driven by the Defense Information systems Agency, the National Security Agency and U.S. Cyber Command. The Army is actually downsizing its force by eliminating seventy thousand soldiers as the budget of the U.S. defense drops by more than seventy five billion dollars.

The intelligence, information and cyber security continues to drive expansion at Fort Meade. The biggest commands at Fort Meade comprise the DISA, Defense Courier Service and NSA among others.
