In 1941, Fort Johnson (Fort Polk) began construction. The soldiers stationed at Fort Johnson (Fort Polk) were participants in the Louisiana Maneuvers – large-scale maneuvers that were engineered to test U.S. troops who were preparing for World War II. These maneuvers tested new doctrines that stressed both mass and mobility.

Although Fort Johnson (Fort Polk) was largely a training facility, it also served as a military prison during World War II. The German POWs cut lumber, cut rice, and picked cotton. The prisoners were not forced to work, but those who did earned scrip, with which they could buy toothpaste, snacks, or other necessities.

In 1962, Fort Johnson (Fort Polk) began conversion to an advanced infantry training center. Soldiers trained in a portion of Fort Johnson (Fort Polk) that was filled with dense vegetation, similar to Southeast Asia. Over the next decade, Fort Johnson (Fort Polk) shipped more soldiers to Vietnam than any other American training base.

After the Vietnam War, Fort Johnson (Fort Polk) saw many changes. In the 90’s, the Joint Readiness Training Center moved to Fort Johnson (Fort Polk) . The post again became a preparation base for soldiers headed into conflict.
