A BRIEF HISTORY OF FORT CAMPBELL

This U.S. Army installation is named after General William Bowen Campbell of the Union Army who was also the last Tennessee Whig Governor. Construction of this camp was initiated in 1942 and in the same year the installation’s first residents had settled in. During the word War II, this installation was the training location for the 20th, 12th and 14th Armored Divisions, the 25th Infantry Division as well as the Headquarters IV Armored Corps. In 1950, the camp became a permanent U.S. military installation.

This base encompasses the Sabalauski Air Assault School which is also home to the Parachute demonstration team that has earned numerous accolades for Fort Campbell. This demo team was the first such to be established back in 1958. In 1984, the 101st command group formed the famed Screaming Eagles, their full time parachute team.

PRESENT DAY FORT CAMPBELL

Today, Fort Campbell is home to the only air assault division in the world- the 101st Airborne Division. Six major tenant units are based here. These include the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (ABN), 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 52nd Ordnance Group, Installation Management Command (IMCOM), U.S. Army Medical Command (MECOM), and Network Enterprise Technology Command (NETCOM). In addition, Fort Campbell also has two Air Force tent units- the Detachment 4-18 Weather Squadron and the 19th Air Support Operation Squadron (ASOS). Other units based here at present include the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division Command, AMC Logistics Assistance Office, U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division Command, 902nd Counter Intelligence Field Office and the U.S. Army 2nd Judicial Circuit Detachment.

FORT CAMPBELL IN THE NEWS

The base has, unfortunately, been in the news for the wrong reasons more than once in the past when serious criminal incidents have taken place here. In 2005, Private Nicholas Mikel caused the death of a group of soldiers when he opened fire on them. He was later sentenced to 25 years imprisonment. More recently, Sergeant Brent Burke was charged with violation of the UCMJ code as well as Article 129 and 134 and sentenced to life in prison without parole for premeditated murder.

Perhaps it is this history that prompts Fort Campbell authorities to take a very serious view of even minor misdemeanors. The base conducts programs such as the recent observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, aimed at curbing undesirable behavior among the stationed personnel.

For servicemen and women stationed at this base the stringent regulations may be both a boon and a bane. Innocent personnel may find themselves charged with violations, facing courts-martial. Taking guidance from an experienced Fort Campbell Military Criminal Defense Attorney like Joseph Jordan helps them protect their rights in the best possible way.
